Guide to Preparing for Lagotto Romagnolo Dog Shows
When it comes to participating in a dog show, the Lagotto Romagnolo must be
prepared not only from a physical point of view, but also behaviorally. For this reason,
socialization and training from an early age are essential. Here are some key steps
for properly preparing your Lagotto:
- Puppy Socialization:
It is important that the Lagotto Romagnolo puppy is exposed from an early stage to
various environments, noises, and sounds. This will help develop a balanced character
and allow the dog to easily adapt to situations it will encounter in the future, such as
those typical of dog shows. - Starting the Show Training Path:
The process begins as a game, with the goal of understanding whether the puppy has
the predisposition to undertake a show career. Nothing should be forced; instead, observe
whether the puppy shows interest and aptitude. - Right Age to Start:
It is essential to begin training only after the puppy is at least 5 months old. At this age,
puppies are ready to understand the first exercises without becoming overly stressed. - Getting Used to the Leash and Show Table:
Start working with a show leash and get the Lagotto used to standing still on the table.
This is a crucial step. It not only helps with grooming procedures but also prepares the
puppy to be judged in a dog show. - Positive Reinforcement:
To facilitate learning, a reward is used during training as an incentive, such as a small
piece of sausage. This helps motivate the puppy during exercises. - Movement and Handler Connection:
The Lagotto must be trained to move at a trot, ensuring smooth and correct movement.
A fundamental aspect of this training is building a harmonious connection between the
puppy and the handler, making it easier to learn exercises such as stacking (standing
still and focused). - Breed Standard:
To be judged in a show, the Lagotto Romagnolo must meet specific breed criteria, both
in physical structure and movement. Morphological and behavioral selection is a very
important aspect to consider.
For a good evaluation by the judge, the Lagotto Romagnolo must:
Have a correct physical structure.
Move well and smoothly.
Show a balanced and sociable temperament. - Focus During Stacking and Movement:
During stacking, the puppy must focus on the reward offered, remaining calm and stable.
During movement, it is essential that there is a strong connection between the dog and
the handler, so that the Lagotto moves in harmony with the person guiding it.
