Care of the Lagotto Romagnolo's Ears

Care of the Lagotto Romagnolo's Ears

Why is the Lagotto predisposed to ear infections (otitis)?

The Lagotto's ears are floppy (pendent) and covered with hair, characteristics that trap moisture and dirt, encouraging the growth of bacteria and yeast.

Cleaning them regularly helps prevent chronic ear infections and bad smells.

How often to clean the ears

Once every 7–10 days is sufficient to maintain hygiene.

If the dog often goes into damp areas or swims frequently, you can check them more often.

Recommended products and methods

Use ear-cleaning solutions specifically for dogs (never water or alcohol).

Apply a few drops and gently massage the base of the ear.

Allow the dog to shake its head to eliminate excess liquid.

Wipe with a clean gauze pad, never with cotton swabs.

Symptoms of infection or inflammation

Check immediately if you notice:

  • redness,
  • bad odor,
  • frequent head shaking,
  • yellowish or brownish discharge.

In these cases, contact your veterinarian: it could be a bacterial or fungal ear infection.

When to consult the veterinarian

If the ear infection recurs frequently, there may be an allergic predisposition or a chronic infection.

An otoscopic examination and a swab test will help the veterinarian identify the most effective treatment.
